"Allow me to remind you." It was like he was drowning, caught breathless beneath the churning waves of the Uthiel Sea. Frantically trying to swim for the surface but it wasn't in the direction his air bubbles traveled, wasn't in the direction the white caps of storm-tossed angry waves made him think it was. Nothing …

Hands white-knuckled on what had once been a lamp post, he coughed until it felt like his lungs were lodged in his throat. Coughed until blood welled in his mouth and his sides felt like they were flayed wide open. Gathered what little strength and courage he had left and let go of the lamp …

It was pointless and he knew better but it didn't stop him from darting at the bars. Didn't stop him from gripping them tight enough to whiten his knuckles before he shook them, hollering for the guard who not moments before had stepped out of sight for a shift change. He risked so much breaking …

Time sped up, a blur that flew by faster than one could track before it stopped. Stood still as a statue and just as pointless. Bone clack-clacked against itself in an unspoken warning that was no less strong for the lack of words to accompany the sound. The sickly sweet clink of metal on metal …

It was like being back in the war, only worse. The ambient magick in the square was rife with danger and lack of Balance, making his instincts yell at him to run before Dhaoine die again. Screams echoed from all directions, fire smoke and stone dust making a mock fog that distorted one's vision and …

Everything hurt. Like the air was fire, cold and piercing, as it bounced around in lungs too strained to properly work. Every nerve registered agony, pure and absolute. All consuming as it tore across skin too sensitive to handle the extra sensation. Bringing a scream tearing out of a throat long shredded by overuse. Blood …

Ahdyfe ran through the Palace, chased by the wails that had replaced the very air, painting the walls with grief. Ran from those horrible sounds that told anyone who hadn't seen Thayne, Alaïs, Xheshmaryú, and Relyt walking the corridors dressed in the deepest blacks, in a block formation, that someone important to the Grey and …

The World blew apart into thousands of millions of pinpricks of light. The sound of its shattering like the wails of grieving widows and the too-wet squishy sound of skin tearing. Each breath in and out was the soft chiming of bells too small to grace a Temple but large enough to adorn thick hair. …

At a sharp knock, Bayls looked up from the painting she'd been working on to find Thayne and Relyt standing in the doorway. Watched them step aside to show Alaïs and Xheshmaryú. The paintbrush fell from her hand and clattered loudly on the floor at the look on their faces, the way the Sinner's face …

It was warmer than he expected as he plunged his hands inside, fingers curling around Rhyshladlyn's half shredded heart, wings flaring wide as he dropped every Shield and Barrier and ward he had on his power and pulled from the beneath, from the still unstable ambient magick, from the dying Selves of the flesh-less things …

Synopsis

The Seven Worlds follows the story of Rhyshladlyn Ka’ahne, an extraordinary Dhaoine born into and raised in conditions that should have broken him but didn’t.

It is a story about impossible choices, heartache, triumphs, horrors and nightmares, bravery, loss, and becoming. One that shows that even when the odds are stacked in your favor, you can still lose but that doesn’t mean you have to give up, only get up and try again but harder this time.

Rhyshladlyn Ka’ahne’s story has, was, and will always be a lesson in why faith isn’t just for the gods. That more often than not, it’s for ourselves first because sometimes family, hope, and love aren’t enough to win the big fight, to overcome every — let alone any — adversity. That sometimes you have to be your own savior.
